Opening Log: 2/10/2010

Wow, new blog. I figured it's about time I documented my horticultural endeavors for the world.

See, I have a genetic problem commonly referred to as "having a green thumb". I've spent most of my life trying to deny it, especially my younger years working in my parent's small victory garden as I grew up on Redstone Arsenal. But it's gotten to the point where I could no longer deny it.

So, I got a small cactus for my room. Nothing fancy, just a cactus. Something I could raise and grow, and if I forgot to water it for a while, no big deal. And I kept this cactus as I moved back into Huntsville from Hazel Green, where it disappeared. I later found it under a cabinet where my [now former] room mate had placed it for God only knows what reason.

That being that, and the cactus being well and truly dead, I used some of the money on a gift certificate my girlfriend's dad had given me to get a small cactus seedling kit. After a bit of work, I finally got it set up and planted and just had to wait:

I placed this next to a window (as the directions said the seeds needed to be exposed to light). Unfortunately, it being right before New Years, the sun just isn't that high, and as my window faces north, it didn't get much sun. The cold snap we had right afterwards in January probably didn't help.

So at the start of February I put the container (still in it's seedling "greenhouse"), and placed it in my kitchen, next to my sink. I turned on the flouresent light over the sink, and waited yet again. This time, Success! Seedlings ahoy! That's five seedlings as of this picture, and I think I have had one more sprout since then!

Although this was a good start, I still wanted an established cactus in my house this spring. So I went with Jenny to the local Home Depot, and after some deliberation, picked out one to transplant into my old container. However, as I was leaving I found another that I felt was too good to pass up. So that's how I picked up this pair of succulents:

The next day while at a local drug store, Jenny (my wonderful girlfriend) found this planter set. This was absolutely perfect, and at the price, I could not pass it up, so that's how I came to possess this Salsa Kit planter.

So, that's the state of my Indoor Apartment Garden right now. I'm waiting on more seedlings for the cacti kit, waiting on any seedlings on my salsa kit (I'm going to have to thin out the tomato and pepper plants on that), and getting ready to transplant the rock garden into a larger container come spring. I'll be sure to update as things keep on growing!
